FAQ’s
How do I pick a colour that will suit me?
Do I need to get anything ready before colouring my hair for the first time?
It’s a good idea to gather a few things before starting. Get an old T-shirt, a few old towels and a washcloth that you don’t mind getting stained, some hair clips for sectioning your hair, a timer, and a hand mirror to see the back of your head.
What precautions should I take when colouring my hair?
Follow these safety tips when colouring your hair:
- Wear gloves and an old t-shirt when applying hair colour
- Be sure to do a skin allergy test and a strand test before applying the colour to your hair
- Carefully follow the directions in the hair colour package
- Never mix different hair colour products
- Don’t leave the colour on your head any longer than specified
- Never colour your eyebrows or eyelashes. An allergic reaction to the colour could cause swelling or increase risk of infection in the eye area. It can also cause blindness
How do I know if I’m allergic to the hair colour?
It’s possible to have an allergic reaction to hair colour at any stage in the hair colouring process, even if you colour your hair frequently. Renew therefore advises you to carry out a skin allergy test 48 hours before applying a new colour. Follow the instructions provided on the leaflet.
How do I know whether the colour will even show up on my hair?
If you wish to preview the colour before applying completely to your hair, we recommend that you do a hair strand test first. Cut a small piece of your hair or select a few strands from behind your ear and apply from root to tip, apply the hair colour mixture to it. Rinse the strand and dry it before assessing the colour.
How long can I keep the colour on my hair for?
The product should be kept on hair for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes, depending on the texture and type of your hair (the strand test will give you a good indication of correct application times for your hair type). Do not leave the product on your hair for more than 45 minutes.
What hair care tips will help me to maintain the colour for longer?
You should only use a mild shampoo when washing your hair. Also ensure you use conditioner on a regular basis to maintain the regular texture of your hair. Using a conditioner will also help keep your hair soft and shiny. We recommend using the specially formulated Renew conditioner.
How long will the colour last on my hair?
Renew is a permanent hair colour creme, which means that it will last until your hair grows out. However, hair colours will fade slightly over time, which means that it will start to look dull and different over a period of time. You will need to retouch your colour in approximately 2 to 3 months, depending on how well you take care of your hair.
Can I re-use any of the left over hair colour mixture at a later stage?
No. This mixture must be disposed of immediately. Under no circumstances should any of the remaining hair colour be kept and used at a later stage.
Can I use hair colour on the same day I have relaxed, permed or chemically straightened my hair?
It is not advisable to use permanent hair colour after relaxing, perming or chemically straightening hair, as it can weaken the structure of your hair. Wait a minimum of two weeks prior to applying hair colour.
How do I touch up my roots?
You should purchase a colour that is as similar as possible to your own processed colour. Apply to the roots only and leave to develop for the recommended developing time (15 -30 minutes) depending on the type and texture of your hair as well as resistant grey areas. With the gloves still on, spread the colour mixture throughout the rest of the hair, massage gently and leave to develop for 5 to 10 minutes, then follow normal directions on the box.
